MS Research Charity Spring Ball – Friday 1 April 2011

Held at the prestigious Pavilions of Harrogate, the recent MS Research Charity Spring Ball was attended by over 160 guests and raised £15,500 for this very worthy cause.

Guests enjoyed a delicious 3-course meal, followed by dancing ‘til late to The Nightshift Big Band, playing swing music featuring sounds of Sinatra, Buble, Basie and Ellington.

The evening was supported by many local businesses including the main sponsors, Walker Morris, One Medical and Sovereign Health Care. Stray FM’s, Paul Hartley, fulfilled the role of compere and Harrogate auctioneer, Charles Smailes conducted the auction, during which a signed Harry Potter book by JK Rowling, one of only 15 donated in a year, caused great excitement amongst guests as bids increased, including a telephone bid, which finally clinched the deal at £1400!

Guests had the chance to win a wide range of over 70 prizes during the evening on the tombola, which alone raised over £2,500.

Proceeds will go towards buying a specialised microscope that will allow researchers at the Edinburgh Centre for Multiple Sclerosis Research to actually watch myelination happening which, previously, they have been unable to do. Professor Charles ffrench-Constant, whose recent breakthrough has brought us closer to finding a successful treatment for this debilitating disease, believes that this state-of-the-art microscope will make a huge difference to their ability to discover more about myelination. Hopes are that this state-of-the-art" microscope will further their ground breaking research to change the whole face of MS for sufferers in the future, by not just slowing down the progression, but stopping it in its tracks and reducing some of the disability.
