Worldwide connections for IATEFL Conference in Harrogate

“This was the first time we’ve had an international ELT conference in DRC!”

Cyril Lungu, the Vice President of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s English Teachers Association was expressing his excitement not at a conference held in Kinshasa, but at the 2010 IATEFL Conference, held thousands of miles away in Harrogate, UK.

For the 44th Annual International IATEFL Conference and Exhibition held at the Harrogate International Centre in April 2010, IATEFL and the British Council offered live interactive online conference coverage to a global audience of teachers and educators.

Using the latest technologies available, Harrogate Online provided a combination of live and on-demand video highlights of this year’s International Association for Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) Conference. Around 2,000 delegates attended the physical conference while the online coverage attracted over 50,000 teachers and remote participants worldwide.

From a conference programme of over 450 presentations and workshops a total of 50 video sessions were made available via this dedicated website aimed at teachers in far-flung places who may not have the resources or the time to travel to the conference.

IATEFL Executive Officer, Glenda Smart comments, “The four day conference and exhibition attracted delegates from around 120 countries and almost every continent.  The venue provided wonderful facilities for networking areas and meeting points, as well as housing a large exhibition and rooms for over 400 presentations and workshops.  The feedback from delegates has been very positive and Harrogate is a very popular destination for our members.”

Speaking for HIC, Kevin McHugh, the Event Planning Manager, said, “Collaborating closely with our client, and the British Council, was vital in delivering this communications aspect to the event. It clearly shows our expertise and facilitation in IT development is keeping abreast of what delegates want, and that is the key to any successful conference.

This form of global interaction isn’t just about information, it’s about conference speakers and delegates communicating thoughts and ideas with each other without barriers. This is all made possible by harnessing the power of online video and combining that with powerful interaction models together with social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook etc.”
