AEV Academic Associate membership:  future proofing our industry

Conference pic

Our industry consists of amazing, skilled, hard working, collaborative event professionals.

The photo above was taken during our annual conference in 2021 as we emerged from the pandemic lockdown.

An exercise showcased that there was over 1,600 years of event experience in the room.

The challenges surrounding talent and recruitment within the events industry has been magnified by the pandemic; many people previously working in the events industry had no choice but to find alternative employment resulting in the loss of highly skilled and experienced talent.

As the industry thrives once more there is a visible shortage of quality talent. It is vital that we protect our industry by nurturing and providing opportunity for future event professionals.

AEV and our members provided a wealth of support to university event management students during isolation and momentum has built with a number of universities using AEV as a portal to reach those professionals within our industry.

As an education establishment with event management courses, we invite you to use us as the conduit between our members and your students through our Academic Associate status.

We can help your students through..

University of Greenwich - exploring event venues of tomorrow

The venues and students enjoyed a day of exploring

“Event venues of tomorrow: sustainability, inclusivity, resilience”

As the live events industry comes back to life after two years of pandemic lockdown, it is now time for event venue managers to refocus on the future.  The session brought together professional event managers from the Association of Event Venues and students and alumni of the University of Greenwich to exchange ideas on the three themes of sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience. What lays ahead for the live event venues of tomorrow?

As an Academic Associate you will be able to facilitate such sessions with AEV members.

... through providing work experience

"I volunteered at this year’s (2019) AEV’s conference. I am a first-year event management student studying at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). It was a great opportunity to gain experience of, witness, feel part of the real-world conversations of event venues. Seeing this collaboration working was truly inspirational. Having considered my future in several areas within the events industry I hadn’t paid much attention to event management within a venue. Attending this conference opened my eyes and made me realise that although you may only work for one venue – you have impact on such a diverse range of visiting events. You can also really make a difference to your role, venue and the industry by being involved in the AEV.

Our annual conference continues to provide this opportunity.

Student MMU

Having never experienced this type of conference I didn’t really know what to expect. I volunteered simply to help and gain a little inside knowledge – The AEV team got me to work straight away – I enjoyed meeting the delegates as they arrived. It allowed me to greet many of the arrivals and provide a great starting point for conversation at their ‘birthday party’ later that evening.
I was fortunate enough to sit-in on many of the sessions, attend the party in the evening obtained great advise from a venue MD and attended the Event Managers working group meeting the day
I volunteered simply to help a hand but I came out having had such an amazing experience, gaining recognition within the events venue industry and more importantly – the satisfaction of knowing that there is a visible career path available at venues."

Students are also welcome to attend our conference as a delegate at a student rate - contact us for more information.

Earning while learning

The benefits of placement and our involvement - case study

Many of our members provide opportunity for Event Management students through placements and as such they are free to join our Event Managers working group.

AEV member Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre does just that and using our relationship with the industry media we were able to feature Event Management student Shelly Sharma's experience in the April/May edition of Hospitality and Events North.
